Before this year, MN statute was silent regarding issuing driver licenses to illegal immigrants. Gov. Dayton signaled he may use rule making authority to unilaterally begin issuing driver licenses to illegal immigrants. In response, Republicans included a provision in the Public Safety bill signed into law this year stopping Gov. Dayton from issuing the driver licenses.
“The provision preventing unilateral issuing of driver licenses to those not here legally is a pro-discussion, pro-process provision because affirmative consent by the MN Legislature is now required prior to issuing driver licenses to those residing in MN illegally,” Lucero said.“It's important the rule of law be upheld."
